With the start of the new academic year, we asked Sianne Blikslager (26) and Jasper Fasen (25) about their experiences as (working) students at Deloitte. We gave them a series of statements to respond to with True or False. Sianne works as a Campus Recruiter in the Tax & Legal recruitment team, focusing on engaging students with Deloitte and finding a match between candidates and teams. Jasper is a Data & Analytics consultant in the Risk Advisory team where he advises and helps clients in using data and advanced analytics responsibly.
1. True or False: All Deloitte employees wear suits to the client and at the office.
Sianne: False! Deloitte’s ‘Be The True You’ motto encourages employees to express individuality. This also means that everyone has the freedom to adapt their clothing choices to their style, as long as they look neat and presentable. Wearing a suit (or blazer) is not mandatory (if wearing a suit makes you feel more confident, then you can wear this), but maintaining a professional appearance remains important.
Jasper: False! The traditional suit can be considered a rare sight nowadays. A much more casual approach, think of a shirt or top, with sneakers, has become the norm in recent years. This casual trend has also been common outside of Deloitte for a long time.
'Working students are the future consultants, managers, and partners. From day one, you are involved in everything.'
2. AI brings advantages to my work.
Sianne: True! AI and tools like Headstart (Deloitte's AI system) already offer significant advantages such as automating repetitive tasks, generating insights, and verifying outputs. I think that in the long term, this will only save more time, increase efficiency, and further improve the quality of work. However, human input remains crucial.
Jasper: True! A study indicated that working with AI (e.g., ChatGPT) increases your workflow by 25% and improves the quality of your work by 40%. You would be wasting your time if you didn't use it. But is (gen)AI the holy grail for all your work? Certainly not, as AI often still falls short of the human brain in terms of creativity.
3. Working students are valued and taken seriously.
Sianne: True! At Deloitte, working students are considered valuable team members. During my time as a working student, I had the opportunity to develop my skills and participate in relevant projects, and my contributions were taken seriously. Because I was so involved as a working student, I was able to start full-time immediately after graduating.
Jasper: True! Working students are the future consultants, managers, and partners. From day one, you are involved in everything.
'Deloitte encourages you to participate in projects that are challenging and educational.'
4. Working students have growth opportunities.
Sianne: True! Deloitte offers many opportunities for working students. Besides the training sessions you are involved in and the experienced colleagues who guide you, there are diverse opportunities. I was very happy that I could grow into a full-time position after my time as a working student.
Jasper: True! After my time as a working student, I wrote my graduation thesis as a thesis intern within the team. After that, I moved to a consultant role.
5. Working students get the chance to work on interesting and challenging projects.
Sianne: True! Deloitte encourages you to participate in projects that are challenging and educational. It’s important, however, not to bite off more than you can chew— balancing school and your other work responsibilities is also very important, and it all needs to be manageable!
Jasper: True! Besides interesting internal assignments, I also had the chance to work on a client project. That provided a valuable experience of what it’s like to work as a consultant at Deloitte. Engage with colleagues over coffee, share your interests, and the opportunities will find you.
